I’ve been invited to speak by Northampton Neighbors today at 3pm. Here’s the group’s announcement with the Zoom link for anyone who did not receive my newsletter. My wife Suzanne will be interviewing me about my life and about my experiences dealing with inequities within the world of women in sports. I hope some of you can join us!

Judy Dixon will share her story of suing Yale University and winning the first-ever settlement against a major university on behalf of women’s athletics. Listen in as she describes the gender disparities in athletics before the suit, the decision to go forward, allies and opponents, institutional retaliation, discouraging prospects, a last-minute victory and a surprising aftermath. She’ll also talk about what life is like for a tennis pro behind the scenes and how she has managed to compete at the highest level into her 70s.
Judy will be interviewed by her wife, Suzanne Slater, local couples therapist and former chair of the Women’s Fund Board.

Bio: During her long, impressive career, Judy Dixon competed at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open and was, for a time, Billie Jean King’s doubles partner. She was the first person to bring suit against a major university under Title IX when she sued Yale for discrimination in women’s athletics and won, making her a trailblazer for women’s equality in sports. The first female sportscaster to provide color commentary on television, she was also the first to be nominated for an Emmy award. She was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 2008. The winningest coach in UMass tennis history, Judy coached the women’s team for 25 years and the men’s for eight. She was voted A-10 Coach of the Year five times.
A member of the U.S. World Senior Tennis Team that brought back gold medals in 2018 and 2019 (and scheduled to play again this year until Covid-19 shut down the tournament), she is currently ranked #2 in the U.S. and top-10 in the world in the over-70 bracket. She serves as a Board Member of Girls Inc., and Moving on Up with Tennis and Education where she and other volunteers provide tennis lessons, racquets and other supplies to over 70 youth, ages 6-18, in the greater Springfield area.
